What is STEM Education?

by Cristina Fritz on April 18, 2013

Wow! It’s cold outside! This morning it was hot and now it’s FREEZING! I wonder how cold it is? How are the animals outside going to keep warm? I want to make a heater bubble to keep me warm!

As humans we naturally gravitate to the “why?” and “what ifs?” of the world around us. Scientific inquiry isn’t a skill acquired through years of specialized studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) areas. Our observations, questions, trials, knowledge collection and conclusions are daily thought processes in our daily lives. We are all natural scientists. STEM education bolsters our intrinsic skill sets though effective communication, innovation, collaboration and critical thinking.

STEM education allows learners to fully immerse themselves in learning experiences. Educators, particularly in primary levels, find it increasingly difficult to address state and district standards in the confines of traditional school days. Subjects are taught in isolation and each requires extensive direct, teacher-centered activity. STEM interweaves the disciplines under an engaging, real-world, relevant, problem-solution based setting. Educators and learners collaborate to build a community of innovation. It asks learners to achieve skill sets not for the sake of mastery alone, but rather to find meaningful connections to their trials and achievements.
